Keeping pets healthy & at home, where they belong

At Companion Animal Alliance, we believe every pet deserves access to the care they need, regardless of their family’s financial situation.

Our Access to Care program provides affordable veterinary services to help East Baton Rouge Parish families overcome barriers to veterinary care and keep their pets healthy, happy, and at home.

Veterinary care can be unexpected and expensive. By offering low-cost services, preventative care, and support for families in need, we help prevent situations where financial challenges force families to make difficult decisions about their pets.

No pet should go without needed care because their family cannot afford it.

How it started

In 2024, Companion Animal Alliance launched our Access to Care Department to build on the success of our Pets for Life program, which has served the East Baton Rouge community since 2017. This new department unifies and expands our outreach efforts, including Pets for Life, community spay/neuter initiatives, rehoming support, lost and found resources, and our Pet Food Pantry.

At the heart of Access to Care is a belief that the love between people and their pets transcends race, geography, and income, and that no one should be denied the comfort and companionship of a pet due to financial or systemic barriers. Our work is especially critical for underserved community members, many of whom rely on these programs to provide basic care for their beloved animals.

Every day, we witness the life-changing impact of these services that bringing joy, stability, and hope to families and their pets. The success of Access to Care reflects the power of community partnerships and the importance of equitable access to pet care.

Pets for Life

Pets for Life began with a simple but powerful goal: to help keep pets and their families together in some of the most underserved areas of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Through outreach, relationship-building, and direct support, Pets for Life has grown to reach more pet owners each year — helping address barriers to veterinary care, pet wellness resources, and essential services.

As our community’s needs have grown, so has our commitment to supporting pets beyond the shelter walls. To expand and strengthen these efforts, CAA established the Access to Care Department: a centralized resource designed to help pet owners find the support they need to keep their animals healthy and at home.

Who we help

Access to Care is available to East Baton Rouge Parish residents who need assistance accessing affordable veterinary services.

Whether your pet needs preventative care, is due for a routine procedure, or you are facing an unexpected veterinary expense, our team is here to help connect you with available resources.

Why we help

When pets receive timely veterinary care, they are more likely to remain healthy and continue living in the homes where they are loved. Access to Care is one way CAA supports the entire community, not just the animals who enter our shelter, but the people and pets who call East Baton Rouge Parish home.

Why it Matters

Each year, thousands of pets enter shelters across the country because families face barriers to veterinary care. By providing affordable services before a crisis occurs, Access to Care helps pets remain where they belong, with the families who love them.

Gardere Community Pet Support Program

Made possible through a grant from PetSmart Charities, CAA’s Gardere Community Pet Support Program expands access to essential resources for pets and families in the Gardere community.

Through targeted outreach, veterinary support, pet wellness resources, and community education, this program helps remove barriers to pet care and supports families in keeping their pets healthy and at home.

By building relationships directly within the community, CAA is creating lasting solutions that strengthen the human-animal bond and ensure more pets receive the care they need.
