Companion Animal Alliance (CAA) is the open-intake municipal animal shelter serving East Baton Rouge Parish. Through our contract with the City-Parish, we provide shelter and care for stray, abandoned, neglected, injured, displaced, and surrendered animals while working to create positive outcomes for pets and the people who love them.
As both the municipal shelter and a nonprofit organization, our mission extends far beyond our shelter walls. Every day, we work to reunite lost pets with their families, connect adoptable animals with loving homes, provide lifesaving medical care, support responsible pet ownership, and expand access to resources that help families keep their pets.
Our vision is for Baton Rouge to be a community where every pet has a safe home, and every family has access to the resources they need to care for the animals they love.

Providing Compassionate Care
Every animal that enters our shelter deserves safety, dignity, and exceptional care. We are committed to:
Providing veterinary/medical care
Meeting each animal's physical and behavioral needs
Offering enrichment, exercise, and socialization opportunities
Treating every animal with compassion and respect
Reuniting Lost Pets with Their Families
Returning lost pets home is one of the most meaningful outcomes we achieve. We work to reunite pets with their owners by:
Holding stray animals in accordance with state and local requirements while maximizing opportunities for reunification
Scanning every stray animal for a microchip
Contacting registered owners whenever identification is available
Supporting lost-and-found efforts through community outreach and online resources
Our mission is to keep pets and people together whenever possible, increase spay/neuter efforts, treat animals humanely, find loving homes, and return lost pets to their owners.
What we do
Every year, Companion Animal Alliance cares for more than 9,000 animals from throughout East Baton Rouge Parish. Our work includes:
Animal sheltering for stray, surrendered, and displaced pets
Pet adoptions
Foster and rescue partnerships
Lost and found pet reunification
Animal transport to partner shelters
Access to affordable veterinary care
Community cat management and Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)
Volunteer and community engagement programs
Humane education and outreach
Our goal is not simply to shelter animals; it is to prevent pet homelessness whenever possible through proactive support for pet owners and lifesaving solutions.
More than a shelter
Many people know us as the place where homeless pets come to find new families, but that is only part of our work.
Every day, our team helps families navigate difficult circumstances by providing pet food assistance, connecting owners with affordable veterinary care, offering rehoming resources, assisting with lost and found pets, and working alongside community partners to reduce unnecessary shelter intake.
By investing in prevention, we can keep more pets where they belong, with the people who love them.
Our commitment
Being an open-intake shelter means our doors never close to an animal in need. We accept animals regardless of age, breed, medical condition, or behavior because every animal deserves compassion and care.
This responsibility comes with unique challenges, but it also provides countless opportunities to save lives through collaboration, innovation, and community support.
Every adoption, every volunteer hour, every foster home, and every donation helps make that work possible.
Together, we can make Baton Rouge a better place for people & pets.
