Part Time Veterinary Technician

Division: Veterinary Care 

Reports To: Medical Director, Staff Veterinarian, Veterinary Intern  

Division of Duties: 80% Intake, 10% Surgery, 10% Other Duties

Time Requirements: Flexible scheduling available. Weekly hours may range from 20-30 hours per week. Must be able to work weekends. 

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provides“day one” orientation when other senior technicians are absent and offers continued instruction to LSU Veterinary Students matriculating through their Animal Control Rotation

  • Contributes to the health care of animals and the analysis of animal disease by assisting with surgery, appointments, diagnostics, intake,and necropsy

  • Assists the veterinarians and veterinary students with pre-surgical and intake examination, treatments, diagnostics, and documentation as laid out in SOPs

  • Scans animals for microchip and examine for any other signs of ownership; if signs of ownership are found, document findings and change stage appropriately to notify client services department

  • Route animals appropriately into animal housing based on assigned stage

  • Assists the veterinarians and veterinary students with surgical induction and prep of animals and aids in anesthetic monitoring throughout surgery 

  • Assists with grant-specific requirements by taking pictures of students on rotation, ensuring that students record performed surgeries, and ensuring students complete the end-of-rotation evaluation

  • Autoclaves and maintains surgical packs

  • Administers treatments to animals being made available for adoption

  • Contributes to the administration of scheduled medications and treatments as directed by the veterinarian

  • Keeps the surgery unit and intake exam rooms clean, organized and disinfected

  • Inputs medicals as instructed by a veterinarian

  • Schedules surgeries and medical appointments

  • Perform and interpret results of diagnostic tests (fecals, heartworm tests, FeLV/ FIV tests)

  • Performs (once certified) and/or assists in humane euthanasia

Valid Louisiana State Driver’s License.

Certified Animal Euthanasia Technician through the LSBVM or be willing to become certified.

Director of Shelter Veterinary Medicine

Position Summary

The Director of Shelter Medicine oversees all aspects of veterinary medical care within the shelter environment at Companion Animal Alliance (CAA). This role ensures the implementation of best practices in shelter medicine, including treatment protocols, sanitation, disease control, and high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter (HQHVSN) surgeries. The Director of Shelter Medicine is a key member of the director team and works closely with the Executive Director, Director of Operations, Director of Programs, and Director of Access to Care to ensure integrated and effective animal care throughout the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Serve as the lead veterinarian for all shelter medical operations, including protocols related to animal health, sanitation, and facility medical flow.

  • Communicate regularly with the Executive Director and the director team on medical protocols, challenges, and improvements.

  • Review and approve payroll for the veterinary team on a bi-weekly basis.

  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal regulations, veterinary medical standards, and drug control requirements.

  • Attend and participate in leadership and director team meetings.

  • Manage the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine rotation by developing protocols, supervising students, providing evaluations, and completing related documentation.

  • Provide preventative and diagnostic veterinary care, including vaccinations, medical exams, and parasite treatment.

  • Perform regular medical rounds and participate in population management rounds to assess and guide care for shelter animals.

  • Conduct high-volume spay/neuter surgeries and a range of other surgical procedures, including but not limited to: mass removals, amputations, enucleations, dental procedures, and minor orthopedic surgeries.

  • Maintain accurate medical records and drug use logs in compliance with industry standards and shelter policies.

  • Stay informed on best practices and developments in shelter medicine, animal health, and surgical techniques.

  • Perform, instruct, and assist with humane euthanasia procedures as necessary.

  • Respond to medical inquiries from fosters, volunteers, and members of the public.

  • Issue health certificates for animals being transported across state lines.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of shelter medicine, herd health, infectious disease control, and surgical procedures.

  • Ability to provide high-quality, compassionate care in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

  • USDA Class 2 Accreditation.

Client Care Specialist (Full Time)

Title: Client Care Specialist

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Providing kind, efficient, and timely client service via high-volume in-person, telephone, and email interactions to each guest without judgment or condescension

  • Providing compassionate counseling while scheduling admission appointments with members of the public to bring in owned or stray animals

  • Completing the initial admission process for all animals entering the shelter via public appointments

  • Displaying knowledge of current adoption discounts including but not limited to adoption specials, military discounts, staff discounts, senior discounts, etc.

  • Counseling members of the public about basic animal care, housing, and medical responsibilities as directed by Standard Operating Procedures and provided materials

  • Becoming familiar with the health and personalities of current adoptable animals, as this changes daily

  • Engaging potential adopters in respectful conversations while actively listening. Offering educated recommendations of available animals and resources based on knowledge gained during conversation

Facilities and Fleet Manager

Description: 

The Facilities Manager plays a critical role in shaping the public's perception of the CAA by ensuring that our shelter facility is maintained to the highest standards. Your commitment to maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment is vital for promoting a positive and professional image of CAA, while also safeguarding the health and well-being of our staff and the animals in our care.

Job Duties include but are not limited to:

  • The Facilities Manager should always maintain a well kept and clean facility. Proper maintenance includes daily debris removal inside and outside of the building, maintenance of items that need repair, including walls, floors, ceilings, lighting. Continuous monitoring and upkeep of play yards.  Anything that appears not to be functioning properly should either be repaired or reported to higher management levels immediately, so it can be addressed

  • Supervise and assist Facilities Specialist in daily sweeping and mopping of the lobby and employee entrance and other areas that need cleaning, maintains hand sanitizers throughout the building, Clean windows, collects and disposes waste, clean and sanitize bathrooms daily. 

  • Provides maintenance and minor repairs to plumbing, HVAC, and sewer systems. Maintains air filters for heating and air conditioning, inspects the washers and dryers, ensuring proper use of laundry/grooming rooms.

  • Train CAA staff on the proper usage and protection of CAA equipment.

  • Manage tracking all valuable assets of CAA.

  • Consult with vendors, contractors and repair personnel to maintain the building.

  • Creates schedule of service contracts and building inspections executed by Operations Director.

  • Keep an inventory of manuals and warranties for building equipment, including architect plans for the building for future use if needed.

  • Manage inventory of CAA vehicles, maintenance records, repairs, routine oil changes and inspections as needed.

  • Maintain inventory of necessary supplies for the Facility and Fleet Department.

  • Direct and supervise appropriate tasks for community service workers.

  • Ensure all proper PPE is being used by Facilities and Fleet Team.

  • Maintain all records of repair and maintenance work conducted at CAA. 

  • Assist in other departments as needed.

  • On call for after hours emergencies 24/7
