About Access To Care
In 2024, Companion Animal Alliance launched our Access to Care Department to build on the success of our Pets for Life program, which has served the East Baton Rouge community since 2017. This new department unifies and expands our outreach efforts, including Pets for Life, community spay/neuter initiatives, rehoming support, lost and found resources, and our Pet Food Pantry.
At the heart of Access to Care is a belief that the love between people and their pets transcends race, geography, and income, and that no one should be denied the comfort and companionship of a pet due to financial or systemic barriers. Our work is especially critical for underserved community members, many of whom rely on these programs to provide basic care for their beloved animals.
Every day, we witness the life-changing impact of these services that bringing joy, stability, and hope to families and their pets. The success of Access to Care reflects the power of community partnerships and the importance of equitable access to pet care.
History
Pets for Life began at CAA in 2017 with a simple but powerful goal: to keep pets and people together in some of the most underserved areas of East Baton Rouge Parish. Since then, the program has grown exponentially, reaching more pet owners every year and addressing gaps in access to veterinary care and pet wellness resources.
As the reach of Pets for Life expanded, so did the need for a more comprehensive approach. In response, we established the Access to Care Department to centralize and grow our support services, including lost and found assistance, rehoming help, low-cost spay/neuter access, vaccine clinics, and distribution of essential pet care supplies.
Together, we are breaking down barriers to pet ownership and helping more pets stay in the homes where they belong.
