Safety Net Program

CAA’s Safety Net Program offers up to 90 days of temporary housing for owners experiencing housing instability during times of crisis. These situations may include domestic violence, entering substance abuse treatment, hospitalization for physical or mental health needs, eviction, or challenges finding pet-friendly housing.

Owner Requirements:

  • Owner must provide proof of ownership of the pet(s).

  • Owner must be a resident of East Baton Rouge Parish and provide proof of current address and zip code - unless the owner is unhoused, in which case a current address and zip code must be provided for a friend, family member or other support person.

  • Access to phone and email communication, either directly or through a case worker.

  • Owners must not be considering rehoming their pet at the time of intake.

Pet Requirements:

  • Dogs and Cat - no breed restrictions

  • Pets must be 3 months of age or older.

  • Pets must not be pregnant or nursing.

  • Maximum of two pets per owner.

  • Pets with a documented bite history, displaying severe aggression towards humans or animals, or exhibiting severe anxiety or stress not manageable with medication are not eligible.

  • Owners must agree to vaccinate and microchip pets at intake if not already completed.

  • If the pet is unaltered, the owner must agree to spay/neuter their pet. 

  • Pets with chronic health conditions must arrive with 30 days of medication supplied by the owner.
